THE HOLY QUR'AAN

SURAH 37
As-Saaffat  (Those Who Set The Ranks, Drawn Up In Ranks, The Arrangers)

INTRODUCTION:

This Surah consists of 182 verses, 860 sentences, 3,826 letters and 5 Ruku’s,

Name

The name is derived from the word was saaffat with which the Sura begins.

Period of Revelation

The subject matter and the style show that this Sura probably was sent down in the middle of the Makkan period or perhaps in the last stage of the middle Makkan period. The style clearly indicates that antagonism is raging strong in the background and the Holy Prophet and his Companions are passing through very difficult and discouraging circumstances.

Subject Matter and Theme

The dishelievers of Makkah have been severely warned for their attitude of mockery and derision with which they were responding to the Holy Prophet's message of Tauhid and the Hereafter and for their utter refusal to accept and acknowledge his claim to Prophethood. In the end, they have been plainly warned that the Prophet whom they are mocking and ridiculing will overwhelm them in spite of their power and pelf and they will find the army of Allah encamping in the very courtyards of their houses (vv. 171-179. This notice was given at a time when there appeared no chance whatever of the Holy Prophet's success and triumph. The Muslims (who have been called Allah's army in these verses) were being made the target of severe persecution. Three- fourths of their population had already emigrated and hardly 40 to 50 of the Companions were left with the Holy Prophet in Makkah who were experiencing all sorts of the excesses with utter helplessness. Under such circumstances, in view of the apparent conditions, no one could believe that the Holy Prophet and the handful of his ill equipped Companions would ultimately attain dominance. The people rather thought that the new movement would end and be buried in the ravines of Makkah. But hardly 15 to 16 years had passed when on the conquest of Makkah precisely the same thing happened of which the disbelievers had been forewarned. Along with administering warnings, Allah in this Surah has done full justice also to the theme of inducement and instruction in a balanced way. Brief but impressive arguments have been given about the validity of the doctrines of Tauhid and the Hereafter. Criticism has been made of the creed of the mushrikin to show the absurdity of their beliefs; they have been informed of the evil consequences of their deviations, which have been contrasted with the splendid results of the faith and righteous acts. Then, in continuation of the same, Precedents from past history have been cited to show how Allah had been treating His Prophets and their followers: how He has been favouring His faithful servants and punishing their deniers and rejectors.

The most instructive of the historical narratives presented in this Surah is the important event of the pious life of the Prophet Abraham, who became ready to sacrifice his only son as soon as he received an inspiration from Allah. In this there was a lesson not only for the disbelieving Quraish, who waxed proud of their blood relationship with him, but also for the Muslims who had believed in Allah and His Messenger. By narrating this event they were told what is the essence and the real spirit of Islam, and how a true believer should be ready to sacrifice his all for the pleasure and approval of Allah after he has adopted it as his Faith and Creed.

The last verses of the Surah were not only a warning for the disbelievers but also a good news for the believers who were passing through highly unfavourable and discouraging conditions on account of their supporting and following the Holy Prophet. In these verses they were given the good news that they should not be disheartened at the hardships and difficulties they had to encounter in the beginning, for in the end they alone would attain dominance, and the standard bearers of falsehood, who appeared to be dominant at the time would be overwhelmed and vanquished at their hands. A few years later the turn the events took, proved that it was not an empty consolation but an inevitable reality of which they had been foretold in order to strengthen their hearts.

23. "Instead of Allâh, and lead them on to the way of flaming Fire (Hell);

24. "But stop them, verily they are to be questioned.

25. "What is the matter with you? Why do you not help one another (as you used to do in the world)?"

26. Nay, but that Day they shall surrender,

27. And they will turn to one another and question one another.

28. They will say: "It was you who used to come to us from the right side [i.e. from the right side of one of us and beautify for us every evil, order us for polytheism, and stop us from the truth i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and from every good deed]."

29. They will reply: "Nay, you yourselves were not believers.

30. "And we had no authority over you. Nay! But you were transgressing people (disobedient, polytheists, and disbelievers).

31. "So now the Word of our Lord has been justified against us, that we shall certainly (have to) taste (the torment).

32. "So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray."

33. Then verily, that Day, they will (all) share in the torment.

34. Certainly, that is how We deal with AlMujrimûn (polytheists, sinners, criminals, the disobedient to Allâh, etc.).

35. Truly, when it was said to them: Lâ ilâha ill-Allâh "(none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh)," they puffed themselves up with pride[] (i.e. denied it).

36. And (they) said: "Are we going to abandon our âliha (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?

37. Nay! he (Muhammad SAW) has come with the truth (i.e. Allâh's Religion - Islâmic Monotheism and this Qur'ân) and he confirms the Messengers (before him who brought Allâh's religion - Islâmic Monotheism).

38. Verily, you (pagans of Makkah) are going to taste the painful torment;

39. And you will be requited nothing except for what you used to do (evil deeds, sins, and Allâh's disobedience which you used to do in this world);

40. Save the chosen slaves of Allâh (faithful, obedient, true believers of Islâmic Monotheism).

41. For them there will be a known provision (in Paradise).

42. Fruits; and they shall be honoured,

43. In the Gardens of delight (Paradise),

44. Facing one another on thrones,

45. Round them will be passed a cup of pure wine;

46. White, delicious to the drinkers,

47. Neither they will have Ghoul (any kind of hurt, abdominal pain, headache, a sin, etc.) from that, nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.

48. And with them will be chaste females, restraining their glances (desiring none except their husbands), with wide and beautiful eyes[].

49. (Delicate and pure) as if they were (hidden) eggs (well) preserved.

50. Then they will turn to one another, mutually questioning.

51. A speaker of them will say: "Verily, I had a companion (in the world),

52. Who used to say: "Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death).

53. "(That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to our deeds)?"

54. (The man) said: "Will you look down?"

55. So he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.

56. He said: "By Allâh! You have nearly ruined me.

57. "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to Hell)."

58. (Allâh informs about that true believer that he said): "Are we then not to die (any more)?

59. "Except our first death, and we shall not be punished? (after we have entered Paradise)."

60. Truly, this is the supreme success!

61. For the like of this let the workers work.

62. Is that (Paradise) better entertainment or the tree of Zaqqûm (a horrible tree in Hell)?

63. Truly We have made it (as) a trail for the Zâlimûn (polytheists, disbelievers, wrong-doers, etc.).

64. Verily, it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-fire,

65. The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of Shayâtin (devils);

66. Truly, they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.

67. Then on the top of that they will be given boiling water to drink so that it becomes a mixture (of boiling water and Zaqqûm in their bellies).

68. Then thereafter, verily, their return is to the flaming fire of Hell.

69. Verily, they found their fathers on the wrong path;

70. So they (too) made haste to follow in their footsteps!

71. And indeed most of the men of old went astray before them;

72. And indeed We sent among them warners (Messengers);

73. Then see what was the end of those who were warned (but heeded not).

74. Except the chosen slaves of Allâh (faithful, obedient, and true believers of Islâmic Monotheism).

SHAKIR: Besides Allah, then lead them to the way to hell.

037.024
YUSUFALI: "But stop them, for they must be asked:
PICKTHAL: And stop them, for they must be questioned.
SHAKIR: And stop them, for they shall be questioned:

037.025
YUSUFALI: "'What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?'"
PICKTHAL: What aileth you that ye help not one another?
SHAKIR: What is the matter with you that you do not help each other?

037.026
YUSUFALI: Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);
PICKTHAL: Nay, but this day they make full submission.
SHAKIR: Nay! on that day they shall be submissive.

037.027
YUSUFALI: And they will turn to one another, and question one another.
PICKTHAL: And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
SHAKIR: And some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other.

037.028
YUSUFALI: They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!"
PICKTHAL: They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth).
SHAKIR: They shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side.

037.029
YUSUFALI: They will reply: "Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!
PICKTHAL: They answer: Nay, but ye (yourselves) were not believers.
SHAKIR: They shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers;

037.030
YUSUFALI: "Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion!
PICKTHAL: We had no power over you, but ye were wayward folk.
SHAKIR: And we had no authority over you, but you were an inordinate people;

037.031
YUSUFALI: "So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins).
PICKTHAL: Now the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us. Lo! we are about to taste (the doom).
SHAKIR: So the sentence of our Lord has come to pass against us: (now) we shall surely taste;

037.032
YUSUFALI: "We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray."
PICKTHAL: Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray.
SHAKIR: So we led you astray, for we ourselves were erring.

037.033
YUSUFALI: Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty.
PICKTHAL: Then lo! this day they (both) are sharers in the doom.
SHAKIR: So they shall on that day be sharers in the chastisement one with another.

037.034
YUSUFALI: Verily that is how We shall deal with Sinners.
PICKTHAL: Lo! thus deal We with the guilty.
SHAKIR: Surely thus do We deal with the guilty.

037.035
YUSUFALI: For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,
PICKTHAL: For when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful
SHAKIR: Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah;

037.036
YUSUFALI: And say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"
PICKTHAL: And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?
SHAKIR: And to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?

037.037
YUSUFALI: Nay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before him).
PICKTHAL: Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him).
SHAKIR: Nay: he has come with the truth and verified the messengers.

037.038
YUSUFALI: Ye shall indeed taste of the Grievous Penalty;-
PICKTHAL: Lo! (now) verily ye taste the painful doom -
SHAKIR: Most surely you will taste the painful punishment.

037.039
YUSUFALI: But it will be no more than the retribution of (the Evil) that ye have wrought;-
PICKTHAL: Ye are requited naught save what ye did -
SHAKIR: And you shall not be rewarded except (for) what you did.

037.040
YUSUFALI: But the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah,-
PICKTHAL: Save single-minded slaves of Allah;
SHAKIR: Save the servants of Allah, the purified ones.

037.041
YUSUFALI: For them is a Sustenance determined,
PICKTHAL: For them there is a known provision,
SHAKIR: For them is a known sustenance,

037.042
YUSUFALI: Fruits (Delights); and they (shall enjoy) honour and dignity,
PICKTHAL: Fruits. And they will be honoured
SHAKIR: Fruits, and they shall be highly honored,

037.043
YUSUFALI: In Gardens of Felicity,
PICKTHAL: In the Gardens of delight,
SHAKIR: In gardens of pleasure,

037.044
YUSUFALI: Facing each other on Thrones (of Dignity):
PICKTHAL: On couches facing one another;
SHAKIR: On thrones, facing each other.

037.045
YUSUFALI: Round will be passed to them a Cup from a clear-flowing fountain,
PICKTHAL: A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them,
SHAKIR: A bowl shall be made to go round them from water running out of springs,

037.046
YUSUFALI: Crystal-white, of a taste delicious to those who drink (thereof),
PICKTHAL: White, delicious to the drinkers,
SHAKIR: White, delicious to those who drink.

037.047
YUSUFALI: Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.
PICKTHAL: Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby.
SHAKIR: There shall be no trouble in it, nor shall they be exhausted therewith.

037.048
YUSUFALI: And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).
PICKTHAL: And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes,
SHAKIR: And with them shall be those who restrain the eyes, having beautiful eyes;

037.049
YUSUFALI: As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.
PICKTHAL: (Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich).
SHAKIR: As if they were eggs carefully protected.

037.050
YUSUFALI: Then they will turn to one another and question one another.
PICKTHAL: And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
SHAKIR: Then shall some of them advance to others, questioning each other.

037.051
YUSUFALI: One of them will start the talk and say: "I had an intimate companion (on the earth),
PICKTHAL: A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade
SHAKIR: A speaker from among them shall say: Surely I had a comrade of mine,

037.052
YUSUFALI: "Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)?
PICKTHAL: Who used to say: Art thou in truth of those who put faith (in his words)?
SHAKIR: Who said: What! are you indeed of those who accept (the truth)?

037.053
YUSUFALI: "'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'"
PICKTHAL: Can we, when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones - can we (then) verily be brought to book?
SHAKIR: What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be certainly brought to judgment?

037.054
YUSUFALI: (A voice) said: "Would ye like to look down?"
PICKTHAL: He saith: Will ye look?
SHAKIR: He shall say: Will you look on?

037.055
YUSUFALI: He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.
PICKTHAL: Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell.
SHAKIR: Then he looked down and saw him in the midst of hell.

037.056
YUSUFALI: He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!
PICKTHAL: He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin,
SHAKIR: He shall say: By Allah! you had almost caused me to perish;

037.057
YUSUFALI: "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)!
PICKTHAL: And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).
SHAKIR: And had it not been for the favor of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought up.

037.058
YUSUFALI: "Is it (the case) that we shall not die,
PICKTHAL: Are we then not to die
SHAKIR: Is it then that we are not going to die,

037.059
YUSUFALI: "Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?"
PICKTHAL: Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished?
SHAKIR: Except our previous death? And we shall not be chastised?

037.060
YUSUFALI: Verily this is the supreme achievement!
PICKTHAL: Lo! this is the supreme triumph.
SHAKIR: Most surely this is the mighty achievement.

037.061
YUSUFALI: For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive.
PICKTHAL: For the like of this, then, let the workers work.
SHAKIR: For the like of this then let the workers work.

037.062
YUSUFALI: Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqqum?
PICKTHAL: Is this better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum?
SHAKIR: Is this better as an entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum?

037.063
YUSUFALI: For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrong-doers.
PICKTHAL: Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers.
SHAKIR: Surely We have made it to be a trial to the unjust.

037.064
YUSUFALI: For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-Fire:
PICKTHAL: Lo! it is a tree that springeth in the heart of hell.
SHAKIR: Surely it is a tree that-grows in the bottom of the hell;

037.065
YUSUFALI: The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils:
PICKTHAL: Its crop is as it were the heads of devils
SHAKIR: Its produce is as it were the heads of the serpents.

037.066
YUSUFALI: Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.
PICKTHAL: And lo! they verily must eat thereof, and fill (their) bellies therewith.
SHAKIR: Then most surely they shall eat of it and fill (their) bellies with it.

037.067
YUSUFALI: Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water.
PICKTHAL: And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water
SHAKIR: Then most surely they shall have after it to drink of a mixture prepared in boiling water.

037.068
YUSUFALI: Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire.
PICKTHAL: And afterward, lo! their return is surely unto hell.
SHAKIR: Then most surely their return shall be to hell.

037.069
YUSUFALI: Truly they found their fathers on the wrong Path;
PICKTHAL: They indeed found their fathers astray,
SHAKIR: Surely they found their fathers going astray,

037.070
YUSUFALI: So they (too) were rushed down on their footsteps!
PICKTHAL: But they make haste (to follow) in their footsteps.
SHAKIR: So in their footsteps they are being hastened on.

037.071
YUSUFALI: And truly before them, many of the ancients went astray;-
PICKTHAL: And verily most of the men of old went astray before them,
SHAKIR: And certainly most of the ancients went astray before them,

037.072
YUSUFALI: But We sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them;-
PICKTHAL: And verily We sent among them warners.
SHAKIR: And certainly We sent among them warners.

037.073
YUSUFALI: Then see what was the end of those who were admonished (but heeded not),-
PICKTHAL: Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned,
SHAKIR: Then see how was the end of those warned,

037.074
YUSUFALI: Except the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah.
PICKTHAL: Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
SHAKIR: Except the servants of Allah, the purified ones.

MUHSIN:

75. And indeed Nûh (Noah) invoked Us, and We are the Best of those who answer (the request).

76. And We rescued him and his family from the great distress (i.e. drowning),

77. And, his progeny, them We made the survivors (i.e. Shem, Ham and Japheth).

78. And left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations to come in later times:

79. Salâmun (peace) be upon Nûh (Noah) (from Us) among the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns and all that exists)!"

80. Verily, thus We reward the Muhsinûn (good-doers - see V.2:112).

81. Verily, he [Nûh (Noah) <><>] was one of Our believing slaves.

82. Then We drowned the other (disbelievers and polytheists, etc.).

83. And, verily, among those who followed his [Nûh's (Noah)] way (Islâmic Monotheism) was Ibrâhim (Abraham).

84. When he came to his Lord with a pure heart [attached to Allâh Alone and none else, worshipping none but Allâh Alone true Islâmic Monotheism, pure from the filth of polytheism].

85. When he said to his father and to his people: "What is it that which you worship?

86. "Is it a falsehood âliha (gods) other than Allâh that you seek?

87. "Then what do you think about the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns, and all that exists)?"

88. Then he cast a glance at the stars (to deceive them),

89. And he said: "Verily, I am sick (with plague. He did this trick to remain in their temple of idols to destroy them and not to accompany them to the pagan's feast)."

90. So they turned away from him, and departed (for fear of the disease).

91. Then he turned to their âliha (gods) and said: "Will you not eat (of the offering before you)?

92. "What is the matter with you that you speak not?"

96. "While Allâh has created you and what you make!"

97. They said: "Build for him a building (it is said that the building was like a furnace) and throw him into the blazing fire!"

98. So they plotted a plot against him, but We made them the lowest.

99. And he said (after his rescue from the fire): "Verily, I am going to my Lord. He will guide me!"

100. "My Lord! Grant me (offspring) from the righteous."

101. So We gave him the glad tidings of a forbearing boy.

102. And, when he (his son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: "O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to Allâh), so look what you think!" He said: "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Inshâ' Allâh (if Allâh will), you shall find me of As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.)."

103. Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allâh), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for slaughtering);

104. And We called out to him: "O Abraham!

105. You have fulfilled the dream (vision)!" Verily! Thus do We reward the Muhsinûn (good-doers - see V.2:112).

106. Verily, that indeed was a manifest trial

107. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice (i.e. ßÈÔ - a ram);

108. And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times.

109. Salâmun (peace) be upon Ibrâhim (Abraham)!"

PICKTHAL: They said: Build for him a building and fling him in the red-hotfire.
SHAKIR: They said: Build for him a furnace, then cast him into the burning fire.

037.098
YUSUFALI: (This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him, but We made them the ones most humiliated!
PICKTHAL: And they designed a snare for him, but We made them the undermost.
SHAKIR: And they desired a war against him, but We brought them low.

037.099
YUSUFALI: He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me!
PICKTHAL: And he said: Lo! I am going unto my Lord Who will guide me.
SHAKIR: And he said: Surely I fly to my lord; He will guide me.

037.100
YUSUFALI: "O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!"
PICKTHAL: My Lord! Vouchsafe me of the righteous.
SHAKIR: My Lord! grant me of the doers of good deeds.

037.101
YUSUFALI: So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.
PICKTHAL: So We gave him tidings of a gentle son.
SHAKIR: So We gave him the good news of a boy, possessing forbearance.

037.102
YUSUFALI: Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!"
PICKTHAL: And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast.
SHAKIR: And when he attained to working with him, he said: O my son! surely I have seen in a dream that I should sacrifice you; consider then what you see. He said: O my father! do what you are commanded; if Allah please, you will find me of the patient ones.

037.103
YUSUFALI: So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),
PICKTHAL: Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon his face,
SHAKIR: So when they both submitted and he threw him down upon his forehead,

037.104
YUSUFALI: We called out to him "O Abraham!
PICKTHAL: We called unto him: O Abraham!
SHAKIR: And We called out to him saying: O Ibrahim!

037.105
YUSUFALI: "Thou hast already fulfilled the vision!" - thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
PICKTHAL: Thou hast already fulfilled the vision. Lo! thus do We reward the good.
SHAKIR: You have indeed shown the truth of the vision; surely thus do We reward the doers of good:

037.106
YUSUFALI: For this was obviously a trial-
PICKTHAL: Lo! that verily was a clear test.
SHAKIR: Most surely this is a manifest trial.

037.107
YUSUFALI: And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:
PICKTHAL: Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim.
SHAKIR: And We ransomed him with a Feat sacrifice.

037.108
YUSUFALI: And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:
PICKTHAL: And We left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
SHAKIR: And We perpetuated (praise) to him among the later generations.

037.109
YUSUFALI: "Peace and salutation to Abraham!"
PICKTHAL: Peace be unto Abraham!
SHAKIR: Peace be on Ibrahim.

037.110
YUSUFALI: Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
PICKTHAL: Thus do We reward the good.
SHAKIR: Thus do We reward the doers of good.

037.111
YUSUFALI: For he was one of our believing Servants.
PICKTHAL: Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.
SHAKIR: Surely he was one of Our believing servants.

037.112
YUSUFALI: And We gave him the good news of Isaac - a prophet,- one of the Righteous.
PICKTHAL: And we gave him tidings of the birth of Isaac, a prophet of the righteous.
SHAKIR: And We gave him the good news of Ishaq, a prophet among the good ones.

037.113
YUSUFALI: We blessed him and Isaac: but of their progeny are (some) that do right, and (some) that obviously do wrong, to their own souls.
PICKTHAL: And We blessed him and Isaac. And of their seed are some who do good, and some who plainly wrong themselves.
SHAKIR: And We showered Our blessings on him and on Ishaq; and of their offspring are the doers of good, and (also) those who are clearly unjust to their own souls.

Or were they there when We created the angels and made them females?

37 : 168

168. Law anna AAindana thikran mina al-awwaleena

'If we had been given a Reminder by our forefathers -

37 : 169

169. Lakunna AAibada Allahi almukhlaseena

'Then we would have been the most dedicated of Allah's bondsmen!

37 : 170

170. Fakafaroo bihi fasawfa yaAAlamoona

Yet they refuted the Reminder when it came to them; but they will soon come to know!

37 : 171

171. Walaqad sabaqat kalimatuna liAAibadina almursaleena

And verily Our word has already gone forth in favour of those whom We sent to warn -

37 : 172

172. Innahum lahumu almansooroona

That verily they would be helped -

37 : 173

173. Wa-inna jundana lahumu alghaliboona

OTHER TRANSLATIONS BY MUHSIN, YUSUFALI, PICKTHAL AND SHAKIR:

MUHSIN:

139. And, verily, Yûnus (Jonah) was one of the Messengers.

140. When he ran to the laden ship,

141. He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was among the losers,

142. Then a (big) fish swallowed him and he had done an act worthy of blame.

143. Had he not been of them who glorify Allâh,

144. He would have indeed remained inside its belly (the fish) till the Day of Resurrection.

145. But We cast him forth on the naked shore while he was sick,

146. And We caused a plant of gourd to grow over him.

147. And We sent him to a hundred thousand (people) or even more.

148. And they believed; so We gave them enjoyment for a while.

149. Now ask them (O Muhammad SAW): "Are there (only) daughters for your Lord and sons for them?"

150. Or did We create the angels females while they were witnesses?

151. Verily, it is of their falsehood that they (Quraish pagans) say:

152. "Allâh has begotten off spring or children (i.e. angels are the daughters of Allâh)?" And, verily, they are liars!

153. Has He (then) chosen daughters rather than sons?

154. What is the matter with you? How do you decide?

155. Will you not then remember?

156. Or is there for you a plain authority?

157. Then bring your Book if you are truthful!

158. And they have invented a kinship between Him and the jinns, but the jinns know well that they have indeed to appear (before Him) (i.e. they will be brought for accounts).

159. Glorified is Allâh! (He is Free) from what they attribute unto Him!

160. Except the slaves of Allâh, whom He choses (for His Mercy i.e. true believers of Islâmic Monotheism who do not attribute false things unto Allâh).

161. So, verily you (pagans) and those whom you worship (idols).

162. Cannot lead astray [turn away from Him (Allâh) anyone of the believers],

163. Except those who are predestined to burn in Hell!

164. There is not one of us (angels) but has his known place (or position);

165. Verily, we (angels), we stand in rows for the prayers (as you Muslims stand in rows for your prayers);

166. Verily, we (angels), we are they who glorify (Allâh's Praises i.e. perform prayers).

167. And indeed they (Arab pagans) used to say;

168. "If we had a reminder as had the men of old (before the coming of Prophet Muhammad SAW as a Messenger of Allâh).

169. "We would have indeed been the chosen slaves of Allâh (true believers of Islâmic Monotheism)!"

170. But (now that the Qur'ân has come) they disbelieve therein (i.e. in the Qur'ân and in Prophet Muhammad SAW , and all that which he brought, the Divine Revelation), so they will come to know!

171. And, verily, Our Word has gone forth of old for Our slaves, the Messengers,

172. That they verily would be made triumphant.

173. And that Our hosts, they verily would be the victors.

174. So turn away (O Muhammad SAW) from them for a while,

175. And watch them and they shall see (the punishment)!

176. Do they seek to hasten on Our Torment?

177. Then, when it descends into their courtyard (i.e. near to them), evil will be the morning for those who had been warned!

178.  So turn (O Muhammad SAW) away from them for a while,

179. And watch and they shall see (the torment)!

180. Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they attribute unto Him!

181. And peace be on the Messengers!

182. And all the praise and thanks be to Allâh, Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

YUSUFALI: He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned:
PICKTHAL: And then drew lots and was of those rejected;
SHAKIR: So he shared (with them), but was of those who are cast off.

037.142
YUSUFALI: Then the big Fish did swallow him, and he had done acts worthy of blame.
PICKTHAL: And the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy;
SHAKIR: So the fish swallowed him while he did that for which he blamed himself

037.143
YUSUFALI: Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah,
PICKTHAL: And had he not been one of those who glorify (Allah)

YUSUFALI: But We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness,
PICKTHAL: Then We cast him on a desert shore while he was sick;
SHAKIR: Then We cast him on to the vacant surface of the earth while he was sick.

037.146
YUSUFALI: And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind.

SHAKIR: Will you not then mind?

YUSUFALI: For, verily, neither ye nor those ye worship-

YUSUFALI: Can lead (any) into temptation concerning Allah,
PICKTHAL: Ye cannot excite (anyone) against Him.
SHAKIR: Not against Him can you cause (any) to fall into trial,

037.163
YUSUFALI: Except such as are (themselves) going to the blazing Fire!

SHAKIR: Save him who will go to hell.

037.164

SHAKIR: And there is none of us but has an assigned place,

037.165
YUSUFALI: "And we are verily ranged in ranks (for service);
PICKTHAL: Lo! we, even we are they who set the ranks,
SHAKIR: And most surely we are they who draw themselves out in ranks,

037.166
YUSUFALI: "And we are verily those who declare (Allah's) glory!"
PICKTHAL: Lo! we, even we are they who hymn His praise
SHAKIR: And we are most surely they who declare the glory (of Allah).

037.167
YUSUFALI: And there were those who said,
PICKTHAL: And indeed they used to say:
SHAKIR: And surely they used to say:

PICKTHAL: If we had but a reminder from the men of old
SHAKIR: Had we a reminder from those of yore,

SHAKIR: We would certainly have been the servants of Allah-- the purified ones.

037.170
YUSUFALI: But (now that the Qur'an has come), they reject it: But soon will they know!

SHAKIR: But (now) they disbelieve in it, so they will come to know.

037.171
YUSUFALI: Already has Our Word been passed before (this) to our Servants sent (by Us),
PICKTHAL: And verily Our word went forth of old unto Our bondmen sent (to warn)

PICKTHAL: Would they hasten on Our doom?
SHAKIR: What! would they then hasten on Our chastisement?

037.177
YUSUFALI: But when it descends into the open space before them, evil will be the morning for those who were warned (and heeded not)!
PICKTHAL: But when it cometh home to them, then it will be a hapless morn for those who have been warned.
SHAKIR: But when it shall descend in their court, evil shall then be the morning of the warned ones.
