THE HOLY QUR'AAN

SURAH 26
Ash-Shu'araa  (The Poets)

INTRODUCTION:

This Surah consists of 227 verses, 1,279 sentences, 5,540 letters and 11 Ruku's.

Name

It takes its name from verse 224 in which the word Ash-Shuaraa' occurs.

Period of Revelation

The subject matter and the style show, and the traditions confirm, that it was revealed during the middle Makkan poriod. According to Ibn Abbas, Surah Ta Ha was revealed first, then Surah Al Waqiah, and then Surah Ash-Shu'araa.(Ruh-ul-Ma'ani, Vol. xIx, p. 64). About Surah Ta Ha it is well known that it had been revealed before Hadrat Umar embraced Islam.

Subject Matter and Topics

The background of the Surah is that the disbelievers of Makkah were persistently refusing, on one pretext or the other, to accept the message of Islam given by the Holy Prophet. Sometimes they would say that he did not show them any sign to convince them of his Prophethood; sometimes they would brand him as a poet or a sorcerer and mock his message; and sometimes they would ridicule his Mission, saying that his followers were either a few foolish youth, or the poor people and slaves whereas, they argued, if his Mission had really some value for the people, the nobles and the elders would have accepted it first. Thus, while on the one hand, the Holy Prophet was becoming wearied by his efforts to show them rationally the errors of their creeds and prove the truth of the Doctrines of Tauhid and the Hereafter, the disbelievers, on the other, were never tired of adopting one kind of obduracy after the other. This state of affairs was causing great anguish and grief to the Holy Prophet.

Such were the conditions when this Surah was revealed. It begins with words of consolation to the Holy Prophet, implying, "Why do you fret for their sake? If these people have not believed in you, it is not because they have not seen any Sign, but because they are obdurate. They will not listen to reason, they want to see a Sign which makes them bow their heads in humility. When this Sign is shown in due course of time, they will themselves realize that what was being presented to them was the Truth."

After this introduction, till verse 191, one and the same theme has been presented continuously, and it is said: "The whole earth abounds in such Signs as can guide a seeker after truth to Reality, but the stubborn and misguided people have never believed even after seeing the Signs, whether these were the Signs of the natural phenomena or the miracles of the Prophets. These wretched people have stubbornly adhered to their erroneous creeds till the Divine scourge actually overtook them." It is to illustrate this that the history of seven of the ancient tribes has been told, who persisted in disbelief just like the disbelievers of Makkah. In this connection, the following points have been stressed:

1.       The Signs are of two kinds:
(a) Those which are scattered all over the earth and by seeing which an intelligent person can judge for himself whether what the Prophet is presenting is the Truth or not and
(b) those which were seen by Pharaoh and his people Noah's people the Ad and the Thamud Lot's people and the people of Aiykah. Now it is for the disbelievers to decide which kind of the Signs they are eager to see.

2.       The mentality of the disbeliever has been the same throughout the ages; their arguments and their objections, and their excuses and subterfuges for not believing have been similar and ultimately the fates that they met have also been the same. Likewise, the Prophets in every age presented the same teachings, their personal character and their reasoning and arguments against their opponents were the same, and they were all similarly blessed with mercy by Allah Almighty. Both these patterns of behaviour and conduct are found in history, and the disbelievers could themselves see as to which respective patterns they and the Holy Prophet belonged.

3.       Allah is All Mighty, All Powerful and All Merciful at the same time. History contains instances of His Wrath as well as of His Mercy. Now, therefore, it is for the people to decide whether they would like to deserve Allah's Mercey or His Wrath.

4.       Lastly, the discussion has been summed up, saying "O disbelievers, if at all you want to see the Signs, why should you insist on seeing those horrible Signs that visited the doomed communities of the past? Why don't you see the Qur'an which is being presented in your own language? Why don't you see Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and mercy) and his Companions? Can the revelations of the Qur'an be the work of a satan or a jinn? Does the recipient of the Qur'an appear to be a sorcerer? Are Muhammad and his Companions no different from a poet and his admirers? Why don't you give up disbelief and search your hearts for their judgment? When in the heart of your hearts you yourselves believe that the Revelations of the Qur'an have nothing in common with sorcery and poetry, then you should know that you are being cruel and unjust, and will certainly meet the doom meant for the cruel and unjust."

26 : 22

22. Watilka niAAmatun tamunnuha AAalayya an AAabbadta banee isra-eela

'Do you consider it a favour to me that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?'

(When Pharaoh accused Moses of ingratitude and treachery because he unlawfully slew an Egyptian soldier and ran away despite the fact that he was given shelter in the Palace by his predecessor and was raised as a son in the Royal household, Moses would not take that imputation below the belt and let him get away without pointing out that the only reason why he wound up in the Palace as a foster child was because his mother was forced to give him up on account of the bloodshed being caused by the Egyptian soldiers. So he wanted to know in what way was it a favour to him for the first-born sons of every Israelite to be slaughtered, and then every Israelite family forced into a painful life of slavery and hard labour?

Lost for words by the forceful argument from Moses, Pharaoh changed the subject and focussed upon the issue of the ‘Lord of the Worlds’)

26 : 23

23. Qala firAAawnu wama rabbu alAAalameena

Pharaoh said : 'And what about this Lord of the Worlds?'

26 : 24

26 : 27

27. Qala inna rasoolakumu allathee orsila ilaykum lamajnoonun

(Pharaoh) declared : 'Verily the messenger sent to you is devoid of sense!'

26 : 28

28. Qala rabbu almashriqi waalmaghribi wama baynahuma in kuntum taAAqiloona

Moses persisted : 'Lord of the East and the West and all that lies in between them, if you have but some sense!'

26 : 29

29. Qala la-ini ittakhathta ilahan ghayree laajAAalannaka mina almasjooneena

(Pharaoh) said : 'If you have chosen anyone other than me as your God, then I will surely throw you in prison!'

MUHSIN:

34. [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said to the chiefs around him: "Verily! This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer.

35. "He wants to drive you out of your land by his sorcery, then what is it your counsel, and what do you command?"

36. They said: "Put him off and his brother (for a while), and send callers to the cities;

37. "To bring up to you every well-versed sorcerer."

38. So the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time on a day appointed.

39. And it was said to the people: "Are you (too) going to assemble?

40. "That we may follow the sorcerers [who were on Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) religion of disbelief] if they are the winners."

41. So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Fir'aun (Pharaoh): "Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?"

42. He said: "Yes, and you shall then verily be of those brought near (to myself)."

43. Mūsa (Moses) said to them: "Throw what you are going to throw!"

44. So they threw their ropes and their sticks, and said: "By the might of Fir'aun (Pharaoh), it is we who will certainly win!"

45. Then Mūsa (Moses) threw his stick, and behold, it swallowed up all the falsehoods which they showed!

46. And the sorcerers fell down prostrate.

47. Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the 'Alamīn (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

48. "The Lord of Mūsa (Moses) and Hārūn (Aaron)."

49. [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "You have believed in him before I give you leave. Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all."

50. They said: "No harm! Surely, to our Lord (Allāh) we are to return;

51. "Verily! We really hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the first of the believers [in Mūsa (Moses) and in the Monotheism which he has brought from Allāh]."

YUSUFALI: (Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed:
PICKTHAL: (Pharaoh) said unto the chiefs about him: Lo! this is verily a knowing wizard,
SHAKIR: (Firon) said to the chiefs around him: Most surely this is a skillful magician,

026.035
YUSUFALI: "His plan is to get you out of your land by his sorcery; then what is it ye counsel?"
PICKTHAL: Who would drive you out of your land by his magic. Now what counsel ye?
SHAKIR: Who desires to turn you out of your land with his magic; what is it then that you advise?

026.036
YUSUFALI: They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while), and dispatch to the Cities heralds to collect-
PICKTHAL: They said: Put him off, (him) and his brother, and send into the cities summoners
SHAKIR: They said: Give him and his brother respite and send heralds into the cities

026.037
YUSUFALI: "And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed."
PICKTHAL: Who shall bring unto thee every knowing wizard.
SHAKIR: That they should bring to you every skillful magician.

026.038
YUSUFALI: So the sorcerers were got together for the appointment of a day well-known,
PICKTHAL: So the wizards were gathered together at a set time on a day appointed.
SHAKIR: So the magicians were gathered together at the appointed time on the fixed day,

026.039
YUSUFALI: And the people were told: "Are ye (now) assembled?-
PICKTHAL: And it was said unto the people: Are ye (also) gathering?
SHAKIR: And it was said to the people: Will you gather together?

026.040
YUSUFALI: "That we may follow the sorcerers (in religion) if they win?"
PICKTHAL: (They said): Aye, so that we may follow the wizards if they are the winners.
SHAKIR: Haply we may follow the magicians, if they are the vanquishers.

026.041
YUSUFALI: So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Pharaoh: "Of course - shall we have a (suitable) reward if we win?
PICKTHAL: And when the wizards came they said unto Pharaoh: Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?
SHAKIR: And when the magicians came, they said to Firon: Shall we get a reward if we are the vanquishers?

026.042
YUSUFALI: He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)."
PICKTHAL: He said: Aye, and ye will then surely be of those brought near (to me).
SHAKIR: He said: Yes, and surely you will then be of those who are made near.

026.043
YUSUFALI: Moses said to them: "Throw ye - that which ye are about to throw!"
PICKTHAL: Moses said unto them: Throw what ye are going to throw!
SHAKIR: Musa said to them: Cast what you are going to cast.

026.044
YUSUFALI: So they threw their ropes and their rods, and said: "By the might of Pharaoh, it is we who will certainly win!"
PICKTHAL: Then they threw down their cords and their staves and said: By Pharaoh's might, lo! we verily are the winners.
SHAKIR: So they cast down their cords and their rods and said: By Firon's power, we shall most surely be victorious.

026.045
YUSUFALI: Then Moses threw his rod, when, behold, it straightway swallows up all the falsehoods which they fake!
PICKTHAL: Then Moses threw his staff and lo! it swallowed that which they did falsely show.
SHAKIR: Then Musa cast down his staff and lo! it swallowed up the lies they told.

026.046
YUSUFALI: Then did the sorcerers fall down, prostrate in adoration,
PICKTHAL: And the wizards were flung prostrate,
SHAKIR: And the magicians were thrown down prostrate;

026.047
YUSUFALI: Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
PICKTHAL: Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
SHAKIR: They said: We believe in the Lord of the worlds:

026.048
YUSUFALI: "The Lord of Moses and Aaron."
PICKTHAL: The Lord of Moses and Aaron.
SHAKIR: The Lord of Musa and Haroun.

026.049
YUSUFALI: Said (Pharaoh): "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross!"
PICKTHAL: (Pharaoh) said: Ye put your faith in him before I give you leave. Lo! he doubtless is your chief who taught you magic! But verily ye shall come to know. Verily I will cut off your hands and your feet alternately, and verily I will crucify you every one.
SHAKIR: Said he: You believe in him before I give you permission; most surely he is the chief of you who taught you the magic, so you shall know: certainly I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and certainly I will crucify you all.

026.050
YUSUFALI: They said: "No matter! for us, we shall but return to our Lord!
PICKTHAL: They said: It is no hurt, for lo! unto our Lord we shall return.
SHAKIR: They said: No harm; surely to our Lord we go back;

026.051
YUSUFALI: "Only, our desire is that our Lord will forgive us our faults, that we may become foremost among the believers!"
PICKTHAL: Lo! we ardently hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we are the first of the believers.
SHAKIR: Surely we hope that our Lord will forgive us our wrongs because we are the first of the believers.

PICKTHAL: Oh, that we had another turn (on earth), that we might be of the believers!
SHAKIR: But if we could but once return, we would be of the believers.

026.103
YUSUFALI: Verily in this is a Sign but most of them do not believe.
PICKTHAL: Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers!
SHAKIR: Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe.

026.104
YUSUFALI: And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

OTHER TRANSLATIONS BY MUHSIN, YUSUFALI, PICKTHAL AND SHAKIR:

MUHSIN:

192. And truly, this (the Qur'ān) is a revelation from the Lord of the 'Alamīn (mankind, jinns and all that exists),

193. Which the trustworthy Rūh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] has brought down;

194. Upon your heart (O Muhammad SAW) that you may be (one) of the warners,

195. In the plain Arabic language.

196. And verily, it (the Qur'ān, and its revelation to Prophet Muhammad SAW) is (announced) in the Scriptures [i.e. the Taurāt (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] of former people.

197. Is it not a sign to them that the learned scholars (like 'Abdullāh bin Salām ŃÖģ <> <> who embraced Islām)[] of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)?

198. And if We had revealed it (this Qur'ān) unto any of the non-Arabs,

199. And he had recited it unto them, they would not have believed in it.

200. Thus have We caused it (the denial of the Qur'ān) to enter the hearts of the Mūjrimūn (criminals, polytheists, sinners, etc.).

201. They will not believe in it until they see the painful torment;

202. It shall come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not;

203. Then they will say: "Can we be respited?"

204. Would they then wish for Our Torment to be hastened on?

205. Tell Me, if We do let them enjoy for years,

206. And afterwards comes to them that (punishment) which they had been promised!

207. All that with which they used to enjoy shall not avail them.

208. And never did We destroy a township, but it had its warners

209. By way of reminder, and We have never been unjust.

210. And it is not the Shayātin (devils) who have brought it (this Qur'ān) down,

211. Neither would it suit them, nor they can (produce it).

212. Verily, they have been removed far from hearing it.

213. So invoke not with Allāh another ilāh (god) lest you be among those who receive punishment.

214. And warn your tribe (O Muhammad SAW) of near kindred[].

215. And be kind and humble to the believers who follow you.

216. Then if they disobey you, say: "I am innocent of what you do."

217. And put your trust in the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful,

218. Who sees you (O Muhammad SAW) when you stand up (alone at night for Tahajjud prayers).

219. And your movements among those who fall prostrate (along with you to Allāh in the five compulsory congregational prayers).

220. Verily! He, only He, is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

221. Shall I inform you (O people!) upon whom the Shayātin (devils) descend?

222. They descend on every lying (one who tells lies), sinful person.

223. Who gives ear (to the devils and they pour what they may have heard of the unseen from the angels), and most of them are liars.

224. As for the poets, the erring follow them,

225. See you not that they speak about every subject (praising others right or wrong) in their poetry?

226. And that they say what they do not do.

227. Except those who believe (in the Oneness of Allāh Islāmic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds, and remember Allāh much, and reply back (in poetry) to the unjust poetry (which the pagan poets utter against the Muslims). And those who do wrong will come to know by what overturning they will be overturned.
